Significance

Panchaanana, Panchavaktra or Panchamukhi Shiva is the combination of Shiva in all five of His aspects – aghora, IshAna, tatpuruSha, vAmadeva and saddyojAta. The Panchamukha Shiva linga is found in rare temples. Four faces are in four directions and in some the fifth face is shown facing the sky and in some it is in the southeast direction. The jyotirlinga at Pashupatinath temple in Nepal is a panchamukha linga.
